Removed my trim senders, used my new $25 hinge pin tool to loosen hinge pins, and get nowhere. They move slightly, but seem locked in with a pin or similar retainer. How to I get to the locking mechanism? Is it behind the U-joint Bellows? Cannot find external means of locking them. 1979 Mercruiser 140 MR. Any help appreciated.

If you have the 12 point hinge pin, and not the pressed in type where the keeper pin is clearly visible on the gimbal ring then there shouldn't be any pins or retainers to my knowledge. The hinge pins have some pretty fierce torque on them, 95# I think and lock-tite as well, try a little harder.....J

I'll give it a try J.., if there's loctite involved, maybe a little heat (judiciously applied) may help. Funny part is, they do turn 2 or 3 degrees before binding. Thanks for the info!!

Just want to make sure I'm turning them the right direction, been cranking them in a clockwise direction (righty tighty, lefty loosey) with the thinking they must be turned into the bell housing. Don't want to be buying a new housing.

I used an impact wrench and a 1/2" allen socket (which fits the 12 point). I didn't need heat but the <br />book(s) and wrenches I know say heat is the way to go to break the locktite.
