15 hp carb problem?

Hi all

When I first start my 15 hp evinrude (1989) it will not stay running, but dies like its running out of gas. If I pull the choke part way it helps some. If I rev it up and back off on throttle it will die even when trying to give it gas. After doing this for a while it will decide to run fine. The carb has never been cleaned or rebuild, does this sound like the problem?

I would back the low speed needle out 1/4 turn and see if it improves it. If not, try another 1/4 turn. You should see improvement after a half to full turn, if not, then it's likely the carb may need to taken apart and cleaned up.

By low speed needle do you mean the adjusting knob next to pull rope.

Yes, to the left of the rope handle.
