15 hp evinrude won't starrt without priming

1989 15hp Evinrude won't start each day until I squirt gas or ether into air intake. But after starting with ether,it will restart every time with one pull & no choking or priming. Runs good. Manual choke valve is closing ok. Thanks.

how's the carb? could need a cleaning or rebuild if it hasn't been done, and the fuel pump could use some TLC also. my 8hp did the same after I rebuilt the carb on it. I shot her full of Seafoam and got her going and shebang it ran great! I suspect it just needed a good kick in the pants.

tim - Ether is a no-no for starting 2 cycle engines as it has no lubricant (ie oil). Real hard on the cylinder walls.

same here, I forgot to mention that to you. whip up a squirt bottle of pre-mix or better yet get a bottle of Seafoam Deep Creep. It'll help do a little decarbing at the same time.

are you using the choke or primer when starting in the morning. pumping fuel hose bulb till hard?

I had the same problem with my 15HP right after I had a tune up, I couldn't get back to the repair shop for a few weeks and posted the problem here.

Turns out the choke knob was reinstalled upside down, the square shaft will bolt down either way. There's a V-grove on the choke shaft, I forget if it should be up or down but you should see it referrenced in the manual.

It solved the problem.

if you are only priming it in the morning when first starting it then it's fine the rest of the day probably nothing wrong with it. Do you take the line loose when you shut it off for the day?
