15 hp Evinrude - year? (maybe a tricky one)

First, let me say thanks for reading this... the ole "what year is it" question must get a bit boring you regulars. Here's my problem.... just over a year ago a bought a 15 hp evinrude. It runs good, but is a bit beat up on the outside. It looks like either, it's been flown in a lot, or rolled around the back of a truck a lot. I just noticed that the badge with the serial/model number is gone. From my initial exploring on the web, I read somewhere that the model # should also be stamped in the quarter sized plug on the right side of the motor.... Mine says "C7155299" and that's all. I'm sure it'd be either mid-late '70's or possibly early '80's.

I should point out that it is a Canadian model (has bilingual labelling on the motor), so the "C" it might stand for Canadian. Does the "7" mean 1977, and the rest the model number?

Other bits of info about the motor... it has a smooth black grip on the tiller, that's different than the checked grey ones I usually see. The cowling is white and decal has a red strip border, dark
blue background and says "evinrude 15" at top, and has a light blue then a darker blue stripe below the evinrude. (I had thought I could tell the year from the decal details, but that doesn't
seem easy to do). Oh, and it does have the water flow indicator... I understand some of the early ones ('75) didn't.

I told the parts guy at the local OMC this number and he told me it didn't mean anything, but he didn't exactly seem like the most helpful kind of guy or a pillar of knowledge if you know what I mean.

I'd like to figure out the year/model # in case I need parts that might be model or year specific,
like ignition parts...

Thanks for your help.

Brent

BF

As you probably guessed, that looks like the serial number. Will need a Model number to find the year. It does sound like a 70's Model though. That plug should have the other number/letters on it, but if it doesn't, look everywhere on the powerhead and post anything else.

Look here:

web page

Hi Rick,

That's the only number on that plug. Yes I was thinking it could be serial number, and was hoping that model or year could be figured out from that. The only other obvious number that I saw was stamped right into the engine block. It's 318928-1 but that sounded like a part number to me. I'll have a closer look at it tonight for other markings.

Are there fairly obvious differences in say, the coils or markings on the ignition box that would help narrow down the range of years?

Thanks again,

Brent

Thanks for the links Bear. I had seen the 9.9/15 article already. It is full of useful info. The link to the parts supplier and the brochure are interesting too... If they used the same decals in Canada, then mine isn't a '74.

Brent

get a manual that will cover all the 9.9 and 15 models and you should be able to figure out from that. i have the seloc manual that covers 1 and 2 cylinder OMC motors from 1971-89

Hi again...

There aren't any other codes that look anymore like a model number on the powerhead... I did a plonk of the cowling and I'll give it a whirl posting it here. Maybe someone will say "hey, that's identical to my 1979 (or ?? year)"

Brent

sorry... if you cut and paste the url w/o the bracketed image codes at the ends into your browser, the plonk should turn up... maybe the image thingy doesn't work on this page??
