I have a 1992 johnson 15 hp electric start. I bought it used, changed the oil in the lower unit and it started right up and ran great. The electric start stopped working but if I use the pull start it fires right up.
I found a little push button switch that sits on the left side below some shift linkage and wanted to know if the shift linkage is supposed to be pushing on that switch? (shift linkage has a small round plastic piece on the end) If I push on it with my finger the motor starts up but I'm not sure how to adjust it-or if I'm missing a piece somewhere along the way??
And since gas prices are rising what is the best octane gas to be running in this?

That switch is intended to prevent you from starting when the engine is in gear, Smallboat.

The linkage should operate the switch when in Neutral. Maybe some part is missing, maybe it needs adjusting.

Good luck. :)

As JB pointed out, that switch keeps you from starting in gear. Notice that there is two bolts holding it in place...there 5/16 heads. Losen these bolts and you can adjust the switch up against the shift lever so that it makes up in neutral.

Use 87 octane.
