I'm looking at buying a 15 yr old boat with a Volvo Penta 3.0 GLP-C motor. It has been stored indoors and looks all new. It has 78 hours on the meter. What do I need to watch for? Are there parts that age even without use that will need replacement - like for example the impeller?

Without knowing more, I would replace all rubber parts including bellows, Replace all fluids and check gimbal and alignment. Storing indoors would be a big plus

Drain and replace fuel and filters

You might need to replace the gaskets in the carb, the fuel pump, drive belts and clean out the gas tank. anything that deteriorates over time.

rubber and plastic parts should have long since been changed as they age no mater if you use the boat or not.

do all the service - including pulling the drive and doing an alignment and checking the u-joints and gimbal
replace the bellows
complete fluid and filter change

you realize that with only 78 hours, it probably hasnt been used in the past 12 years. Historically, new boats get used about 30-50 hours for the first few years.

I appreciate the advice so far. I'm looking at it in a couple of days. Apparently a recent service was done with oil and filter, new plugs and wires and a new prop. I am still wondering if the impeller could deteriorate with age.

3 out of 3 which have replied agree
It can deteriorate but also just sitting in one place the impeller can create a set (won't flex back out)

Volvo Penta recommends replacing the impeller and bellows every 3 years. no mater if you use the boat or not. its a rubber part
