150 hp 1986 evinrude

Does anyone know if you can test the output of a power pack with an ac voltmeter or does it take a special tester? I have no fire on a middle cylinder and I have already swapped out a working coil which made no change. Any tips would be appreciated.

I had a similiar problem with my 1983 Evinrude 200. No spark on my #5 cylinder. I tried to do the test using an ohmmeter but couldn't figure it out so I just swapped the powerpacks from starboard to port. Turned out to be the powerpack since there was no spark on my #6 cylinder. (same spot - diff side) My powerpacks are the same for either side but not sure if yours can be swapped. See if they are same part #. I also had to change the Timer Base due to a high reading (28+) and short in the base itself. Howdy, Paddling. Flgonzo is right. Your engine has two identical 3 cylinder ignition systems, so you can "test" any component, including the power pack, by swapping sides.<br />The procedure for testing given in the book requires a special fixture.<br /><br />Good luck.<br />JB

Shop Manuals are indispensible for this type of testing... You can test the powerpack resistance (OHMS) of the secondary coil, but not the primary, with a voltmeter, but any further testing will require a special tester which puts live voltage to the coil, according to my OMC Shop Manual......I just ran down a problem w/my 83 Evinrude, 75 hp......no spark, no ignition.....turned out to be the timing base (charge coil) under the flywheel......flywheel magnets were OK, coils-OK, powerpack-OK, neutral start switch-OK, Starter and starter solenoid-OK, Stator-OK, keyswitch-OK.....
