does this engine spend much time tilted up?
and is it gear lube or two stroke oil?

Very seldom tilted up, on lift in marina unless on trailer during winter months.Noticed it when i took it out to replace water pump impeller. Oil is two stroke Yamaha lube.

its also possible that the pump shaft seal is leaking, but look for external leaks first.

Re: 150 HPDI leaking oil

No external leaks found and engine smokes excessive for HPDI when started each morning after sitting on lift with engine level. Had lift fuel pump with small hole in diaphram which made hard to start sometimes, repalced both fuel pumps a couple of weeks ago, now starts and runs great, but still has excessive smoke when starting sometimes after sitting. Local Yamaha tech thinks maybe all extra fuel has made lower crank seal bad, but not ready for that cost yet. Will pull oil pump back to check shaft seal, waiting on new o ring to come in first. Left lower unit off and cleaned all oil from lower end of crank area and next morning had small amount of green lube that dripped into pan, maybe 10 drops.
