I just got this boat and the previouse owner has removed the vro oil pump and now it is mixed in the tank.. Is ther a fuel pump (electric) that i can use? It dies or doesnt want to go on take off. I can get it up to speed by choking it intermittintly. Is there a mechanical fuel pump on the motor?

If the VRO was removed (not a bad thing) there should be a fuel pump installed on the block.

Is there one on the block (existing) or is there a place to install one? An in line electric available?

Try pumping the primer bulb to see if
it helps while trying to plane.
May just need a carb cleaning?
Electric fuel pumps on carb motors is
not a good idea.

There is a place on the block, maybe a plate covering the crankcase hole. Since the VRO is both the fuel and oil pump when removed a fuel pump must be installed on the block to run right. Follow the fuel hoses from the carbs and you should find the pump. Maybe the PO installed the wrong one (like from a smaller engine-not enough volume).

My 150 Evinrude is the same set up. Standing at the back of the motor facing forwards on the left side of the motor there should be either one large or two small mechanical fuel pumps attached. This is a common modification when junking the VRO (which is a good thing). I've never owned one with the single pump set up, but the dual pumps work well and are very easy to rebuild if needed. They are mounted one above the other and are easly accesable. Just follow your fuel line right up to them or it as the case may be:)

Re: 150 johnson

I guess it could be different depending on the year but the VRO pumps I have dealt with have been on the front of the motor between the sets of carbs. The VRO pump is an air pulse pump that gets its air pulse from the compression of one of the bottom cylinders. It is a two sided pump so you can unhook the oil side and the fuel side will still work. The diaphragms in the fuel side may be bad. If you have a fuel pump test kit here is a way to test it.

If it is bad you can get rebuild kits for them, or you can get pumps that will fit that are made without the oil side of the pump. May be a few dollars more but a lot less hassle then rigging up electric fuel pumps.

Re: 150 johnson

If using the choke gets it going , the carbs are clogged up.
The choke bypasses the carbs.
Rebuild the carbs with carb kits.

2 pumps one on top of the other. Both for fuel or was one for oil when the vro was disconnected? can it be bypassed? thanks for all the help.

Both are for fuel. The original vro would have mounted on the front of the motor as previously posted.
