I noticed the engin getting a lil warm at the pee hole so I decided to take a look at the thermastats. The lil salt looking things dont know how they ever worked and even when they did It dont look like much water would go through there anyways. So my question is Here were I live Gulf coast Texas the water is 86 degrees and never below 55 is it ok to leave these thermastats out ???????????

I dose flow better without them

Hi Robalo,

The only problem about leaving the T-Stats out is that during slow operation the temperature may fall so low that the warm-up mechanism may activate once the temp falls below 100 degrees, and your fuel milage will suffer.

If you don't have to go long distances at say 4 MPH, then there should be no harm in running without them.

Me personnally, I'd only run without them in an emergency.

If your T-Stats had alot of salt on them, then you should check the pop-off valve and clean that too, especially if you replace the T-Stats.

You will need new gaskets for the pop-off valve.

Kenny

Robalo-you can 'gut' the thermostats..that is cut the two side retainers, take the insides out, and put the shell back in-this will restrict the flow just enough so it won't run too cool

engine at idle or under 1500 rpm will be running cold, will be a while warming up when first started and may foul plugs. I'd stick a couple new ones in or clean the salt off the old ones and test em in a pot of water, they may look ugly but still work. warm em up put a thread between the valve and let it cool and close over the thread. Put back in a pot of water free hanging by the thread, warm the water up and put a thermo in there, at around 143 F +/- 5 degrees the thermo should open again and drop off the end of the thread. Easy quick check. Think new ones are about $20 each.

If there was any reason that Mercury could have left them out they would have, the thermostats are there for a reason. Do yourself a big favor buy new ones and re-install as well as checking the Popet valve. Also if you haven’t inspected your water pump and impeller in the last 12-18 months replace as well.

Your now heading into the summer boating season and would be better cooking hot dogs instead of your engine.

RF
;)
