I have a 2004 150 4 stoke yamaha. recently went out to a sandbar where I was trimming the motor from the T/T on the cowling. As i was trimming the motor, it stopped working. I got up in the boat to try the T/T on the throttle it also it did not work. Then I tryed to start the boat and got nothing. I noticed that the tachometer gauge was dim and it slowly faded until it was out completely, 5 mins later the same thing happened to the MPH gauge. I checked all fuses, battery switches, the relay on the motor was clicking when i tried to trim so Im sure power was gettin to motor. Also all other electronics in boat worked fine and batteries were fresh and charged.

Im totally lost. ANY IDEAS??????????

Re: 150 stroke no elec.

sounds like a bad battery connection or cable, test the battery and any switches and all cable connections for loose/corrosion.

Doesnt make any sense to me.

Re: 150 stroke no elec.

makes perfect sense to me, as the current is trying to flow through a loose/corroded connection it cannot. as it tries the electrical pressure(voltage) drops below acceptable limits. this can happen slowly with a small draw or instantly with a draw like a starter motor or trim motor.
remember voltage is simply a measure of electrical pressure, current is actual electron flow.
its possible to have pressure with very limited flow and a rapid drop in pressure.
an analogy
you turn off your garden hose with a trigger spray nozzle after washing the car.
the hose sits in the sun. now the water in the hose is under 20 PSI or so.
you squeeze the trigger and get a short burst then nothing, guess what, the closed valve is now the loose terminal.
electrons work on the same principle as water in a pipe.
so yes it makes perfect sense and happens all the time.

especially on hulls that riggers splice the battery cables under the deck to lengthen them. splices just dont work well.
the hull electronics are wired seperate from the engine in most applications so while they may work the engine electrics may not. 2 seperate circuits.
remember all the current leaving the negative terminal MUST be able to make it back to the positive terminal of the valve got closed.

Thanks again, I try all connections and wires with a circut tester.
