150 VMAX Bogging on Take-off

Yep, last trip out with my 2000 V150TLRY carbed VMAX it ran fine for a little while and then started bogging down when hitting the gas during take-off.

Bumped the choke and then it took off like the proverbial scalded dog.

From being on Iboats a while and also searching and reading I guess I am pretty certain it is probably dirty carbs. Filter was recently changed, I know the gas and lines and such are good and I use seafoam every time the tank is filled but I guess carbs do get dirty after a while.

I'm just wondering about the fuel pumps though. I plan on going ahead and overhauling them while I am working on the motor but just wondering if it could be one of them rather than the carbs. Runs fine after it gets up to speed so that kind of throws me regarding the fuel pumps but there was a time or two when it wouldn't reach max rpms when given full throttle.

As I said, bogs during take-off, bump the choke and it jumps out of the water and runs fine after that......until you want to take off again that is.

Just looking for some input so what do you guys think?

Thanks!

Re: 150 VMAX Bogging on Take-off

Well, I pulled the carbs and tore them apart. They were as clean as they could possibly be. Looked almost brand new. I still blew them out with carb cleaner and air before I put them back together. Floats move freely and there was no trash etc. in the bowls.

Problem is this still did not resolve my problem. Still has a rough idle and still wants to bog down when given full throttle. Ease back on the throttle and it takes off after a few seconds. Or give it half or less throttle and it stalls a little and then accelerates pretty good. And if you bump the choke it goes also.

Checked bulb, fuel lines, and anything else I could think of. Also have a Yamaha 10 micron 90 gph water seperator/filter and the filter has been changed too. Even took the filter out of the picture and used new hose to connect directly from the tank and still no luck.

Only thing is I have still not changed the fuel pumps and still wondering if they could cause the bogging down. I as told by my dealer that there is no kit for these pumps so have to buy new ones. I suppose that I could order the parts individually but probably be simpler just to buy the pumps.

Also seems I remember that all of this started after I ran for a 1/4 mile or so with the motor trimmed up some as I was going through a stretch of shallow water. Since then it seems I have been having this problem. Don't know if that was the cause or not but thought it might be worth mentioning.

Would really like some opinions from you guys out there as I am about at the end of my proverbial rope here. Motor runs fine after initially bogging down at take-off. Good rpms and such, just rough at idle and at very slow speeds.

Thanks!
Brad

Thanks Ray, for your comments!

That is what I was thinking. In fact, I should have gone on and done it earlier as I said I was going to do in my original post.

Guess I'm getting a little stubborn in my older age but since the motor is almost 7 years old it probably is overdue for fuel pump change. Guess I was thinking that since it ran fine once the bogging ended that it was more carb-related than anything else but after taking the carbs apart and seeing how good they looked and all I went ahead and took the boat out only the have it do the same thing.

It did idle a little better for just a little while and in fact ran a little better but later on started doing the same thing again.

Going to start looking for some pumps.

Thanks again!
