Just got a quote to replace the lower shift cable in my 165 merc. I/O. Is $1500.00 (CDN) a resonable price or am I in the wrong buisness and should become a marine mechanic?

I would also like to see the details of your quote are they only replacing the Shift cable????......to give you something else to compare to, below is the quote i received to replace the Shift cable/ bellows / and trim sender on my boat... I already have the bellows replacement kit for that i purchased for $200. So if i do all that he has listed in the quote and what I have spent on the kit it will set me back little over $1000.

Does this sound like a more reasonable price for this work?

Description Qty Cost Total
Trim Sender Kit 805320A 1 99.95 99.95
Bellows Adhesive 9.60 9.60
Shift Bushing/Seal Upgrade Kit Alpha 805041A2 41.20 41.20
Shift Cable Kit ALPHA 865436A03 88.25 88.25
Transom Seal Kit Labor w/Gimble Brng 85.00 510.00
Replacement 6 Hrs
$749.00
$808.92 with tax

If you are near central PA bring it to my house and Ill do it for $1400 and give you about $400-$500 back in change. LOL But seriously is your engine compartmant easy to get too. Maybe they have to remove alot of seat stuff to get to transom.

There will be no trouble working with the engine as I can almost sit beside it on either side. I think this guy had too many fumes when he quoted that price

do it yourself for the price of parts.take outdrive off takes 15 min. putiing it back on the same. plus you need to this every year and check alignment and grease shaft. the other stuff could take 8hrs for you but i bet you wont regret learning how. alignment shaft is 40 -80.00. which you and your friends will use for small rental fee.

If you are not intimidated by doing the repairs on your boat, then start learning how to maintain it yourself. For the price quoted, you can buy a quality set of tools one time and have them for life. Buy a factory manual, alignment tool, and stick around here and ask questions when you aren't sure of something. With the help given here, you can do it. There's a lot of self appreciation doing your own work, but only if done right.

Have you tried adjusting it first if you are having problems with it?

Mike, Replacement of the lower shift cable is not a straightforward repair. I recommend you get a manual and follow the steps exactly.
