HI all, I am new to this outboard thing so here is my problem: I just bought a used 1984 150hp outboard from New Jersey and I live in Alaska. The problem I am having is that when I turn it over, it fires, then automatically shoots up the rpm to around 4000 or 5000 then I shut off immediatly ....... and try again......same thing, it fires right up but it sounds like something is stuck open but visually nothing is, Carbs closed, throttles fine.........everything looks like as it should. The only thing I can think of is that something is wrong in the throttle box itself.....Could this be?? Please help! let me know, thanks for your time. J

J - If I remember correctly the carb and spark advance are hooked to the throttle cable via a spring and a roller that rides on a throttle advance cam. (post bottom side of powerhead). Make sure the spark advance is not stuck open. If it is not, you need to remove all the spark plugs, except number one, put a timing light on number one and discover the timing, and reset to spec.

Hello J,
I have the same engine with the same problem. I noticed a broken part that is part of the throttle linkage of the engine. The part is located just under he fly wheel. My guess is that this part kicks the engine into gear. I am scheduled to see the mechanic. I'll keep you posted.
