I am helpig someone with 150 1985 Johnson. The motor seems to be flooding at idle. I have oil (black not raw) running down the mid section as if the power gasket is leaking. The plugs are also fouling from the flooding. I also notice milky substance on inside of carbs and on throttle plate. I asuming this may be just condensation?

I have cleaned carbs twice. Double and tripple checked floats. I have verified the fuel primer selenoid is not leaking into carbs by pinching the hoses with little clamps. I have sync and linked three times. I have set idle and throttle pick up timing more than once. And rechecked after that. It seems to do it with the cowl on or the cowl off. I can spot the milky substance on throats. Then drain carbs and fuel water seperator and find no water which leads me to beleive it condensation perhaps. Every time I clean carbs and plugs it runs good fr a short period then right back to not wanting idle under a load. Oh yea it idles fine on the hose but free in gear it acts as if it loads up. I also cant get the idle much higher than around 650 or so with out making idle timing extremely out of spec. MAybe it is not getting enough air? Bigger jets? Since this motor does not have idle air adjustmen. Any help would be appreciated. I have searched and searched using the serach feature but cant find the answers I amlooking for. Thanks in advance.

Sorry forgot to mention that. around 105 to 108 on all cylinders. Leak down was about 8-10% on all cylinders. Thanks.

Check the recirculation valves as shown in the manual if one or more flow in both directions it will run bad at idle

There may be a couple of things going on here. That vintage crossflow was kinda known for cracking the exhaust housing in the mid section. That would explain where the black oil is coming from thats running down the mid section. It probably is worse towards the front. Might look like its coming from near the top mount area.

The milky substance is indeed condensation. No big deal. When setting the idle dont pay a whole lot of attention to the exact timing number. A lot depends on backpressure etc.

If you havent decarb'd in a while lets start there. Sticking rings will play havoic with idle. Make sure you have Champion plugs. I like the (Q)L77JC4's in my crossflow. Make sure we have fresh 87 octane. 6 or 8 week old fuel doesnt count.

Look at the coils. Clean all the connections including grounds. Dont forget to look at the small orange wire connection. If you even think the plug wires are bad, change them.

Hey DH and jon thanks. DH sounds like that is def where the oil is coming from. The idle timing when i said i was way out before I could get it to idle up I meant like 20* out.I will try a decarb and we are using champion plugs just what it calls for on the breather. The fuel I just filled it up. the gas is prob one week old. I will start over with a decarb and also I am thinking about dumping out his oil tank and refilling it with a better oil. I think he said he was using Penzoil.

To rplace the adaptor in mid section youll have to pull the pqwerhead and drop the gearcase.

I wouldnt woory too much about the Pennzoil, its a very good oil.

Re: 150hp 1985 Johnson killin me

ok. Tried decarb, cleaned carbs again, ran on new seperate fuel tank, sync and link again. Still run fine WOT but still seems to load up after about ten minutes in gear but no throttle. What is the normal operating temperature of this motor. I read about 175 on the heads while is wanting to cut out today. I also found that the overheat buzzer is not working by grounding the temp sensor. So I am not sure if it running hot some or not. The motor states 8 degrees at throttle pick up but in order to get the idle speed up where it does not want to cut off it wants to be idle around 8 and throttle pick up around 12 degrees. But I still cannot get it to idle up high enough. There are no idle air adjustments on these carbs just set jets so would I need bigger air jets? Any thing will help me at this point. Thanks in advance!
