I am new to fixing outboards or engines in general realy. I have been trying to shake the idea of attempting a rebuild of an old engine for years now but can't do it. I am going to look at this engine above tonight. Owner bought it at a garage sale and says it looks all there but is "frozen up" other than that he doesn't no anything about it or old engines for that matter. He is asking $75 for it. Do you guys have any advice on this for me?

Motor is a 1953-54 Evinrude Super Fastwin 15 hp. Yours was built in 1954.

That is a great motor and one of my favourites. You can still find lots of used parts and all the tune-up parts are available from your local dealer or online. $75 is a little steep considering the powerhead is frozen. However, if its cosmetically nice then it might be worth the price. You are looking at $150-200 in tune-up parts plus whatever it costs to rebuild the powerhead, which might be very little or very much depending on why its siezed. Keep in mind that in the end the motor will probably not be worth what you invested.

If you decide to follow through with this project then send me a PM with your email address and I'll send you the parts manual for your motor. It'll help immensely. Don't be discouraged, there are so many knowledge folks on this site that are willing to give their advice that you can get through this project if you choose to take it on.

My book shows it to be a 53-54, those were, and still can be, nice running engines. The one thing that would scare me off is being frozen up. If the engine is froze up beyond repair, the man has a replica of a 15 Evinrude, and $75 would be to much in my opinion. See if he has the gas can to go with it, these can bring as much, or more than the engine.

I asked about the gas can as I read somewhere that years prior to 1959 have the pressure tank. Unfortunately he does not have the gas can to go with it. Can it be converted to use a fuel pump?

Yes it can. However, I'd just look for a used pressure tank. They can typically be had for $50-100 on eBay or other buy & sell sites.

That is a great motor, but I must say you can find a better deal. In good running condition with tank that motor will fetch $250-300. Personally, I'd go back armed with the numbers I've given you and make a better deal.

Thanks Wayne. I certainly will go armed to get a better price with the info you gave me. I appreciate it. Is there any quick way to check for an indication of why it is seized?

Not without taking things apart. You can pull out the spark plugs and inspect them and anything you can see through the plug hole, but that's about it unless he'll let you remove the bypass covers or head (I doubt it). You can also try to rock the flywheel. Any movement is good. Sometimes a frozen powerhead is actually due to a seized lower unit so try shifting the lower unit and see if its working ok.

I went and looked at it today. definitely no movement. It has some other issues as well the the chock control is bent, end is broken off. the cover is the clam shell style pretty good but a decent dent in it, and the busing on the motor to hold the cover on are pretty much toast. It didn't have the plugs on it. I could see a little rust on top of one for the cylinder heads through the plug hole. I could get it to shift fine and the propeller would turn in forward and reverse. As i understand it is not supposed to have a fuel pump and should have a two hose tank. It does however have a one hose hook up and a pump however one of the plastic fitting on the pump is busted off. It must have been upgraded at some time. All in all i would say it is not in very good shape. The lower unit did appear to be pretty good thou besides a little bend on the skeg. We talked about it for a while and he agreed to sell it to me for $25. I may have bought myself an anchor but at least i can give it a shot. You may have seen another thread i sent out earlier (should i buy it, 7.5hp evinrude). I got a sweet deal on a 1953 7.5 evinrude today. that I am really excited about. These two engines should keep a newbie like me busy for a while. :) you will be hearing alot from me over the next few months. Thanks for all your guys help, i appreciate it.
