i just bought a 15HP merc from a private seller. It's about a 1998 model.I took it out to try it. It started easily and seemed to be running good, but i sw no sign of cooling water coming out.i called the previous owner and he said it doesn't take in cooling water til the engine gets hot and might take 3 or 4 minutes.i ran it for about 10 minutes wwith no sign of water discharge.I took the cowling off and felt the cylinder heads. The were pretty warm, but not hot.I could keep my finger on the heads. The river water was cold and so was the air temperature. Is this delayed cooling the way small mercs work?

hey,

you might have a thermostat problem and there could be something else, the water may simply be exiting the exaust, but that would only happen if there was a block in the tell tale. did you actually see the water come out of the tell-tale yet? i think you should pull the thermostat and run the engine, if water shoots up everywhere then maybe try changing your thermostat, if water doesnt shoot up at all, then im guessin you have a problem with your water pump

You should get water from the telltale within 5 seconds of starting.

Impeller is probably shot, or the hose to the telltale is clogged.
