I have a 1988 15hp sears gamefisher, the Force model. I have purchased new seals for the lower and I am having trouble getting the new driveshaft/ water pump seal in. I took the old one out. It was very old and leaking. The new seal seems too big to fit in. No marine repair shop in my area could help me. What should I do?

Thanks a lot

Suggestions Until ?Real Help & Techs? Arrives:

1. Have you compared the old and new seal?s sizes with a micrometer/caliper/ruler/eyeball/feel?

2. Can you post close pictures with the old and new seals stacked together (and any pics of problems)?

3. ?A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words?!

Re: 15hp driveshaft/ water pump seal change problem

I do not have a picture right now. I did size them up. The old seal looks smaller but it might be possible that it is just an effect of dry rot. There are some other small detailed differences that I noticed. Someone suggested that whoever sold me the new seal just sold me the wrong one- or at least a seal for a newer model.

Good news is that I found a seal kit on ebay that matches the correct model number, and it is in the mail. In theory the kit I just bought should answer some of my questions.

When I do have the correct seal, do I just put the seal in right out of the package or do I need to apply some other kind of sealant to glue it in place?\

Thanks

I waited for some Real Experienced Owners/Techs to jump in on your question. ?When I do have the correct seal, do I just put the seal in right out of the package or do I need to apply some other kind of sealant to glue it in place?\? From my experience, a coating will be on the outside dia of the seal if it?s needed. Usually additionally sealants are not used when an item is a pressed fit. Plus, directions and etc. will probably come with the kit if needed. A quick glance in my Clymer manual d/n mention a sealer. You might want to post the question "directly", up-front in a new post if no instructions come with the kit or before.

Good Luck,
