Hey everyone, I am new to the site and i have a problem with one of my boats' motors. I have a jon boat with a 15 horse evinrude, 1986 year model, motor on it I got a few days ago and it won't start at all. The person I bought it from says it ran great and then just died for no appartent reason, said it acted like it was getting no fuel.

Anyways here is what I have done so far:
-Tried starting it with starting fluid with no success at all, not even attempted to start.
-Pulled plugs out to check for spark and I has spark, but seems like it isn't as strong as it should be. I don't know that for sure though.
-I have turned the motor over a bunch using a drill just to save my hand and I can smell the fuel mixture coming from the exhaust.

Anyways, I am stumped on this and do not know what else to do, or what else it could be, other than the coil packs not getting enough voltage from the module for sufficent spark, but I can not check that because I do not have the repair literature yet for this motor.

Any help on this problem would be more than appreciated.

Thanks,
Derek

Firstly make a note of http://www.sschapterpsa.com/ramblings/Ramblings.html
You'll find practically everything about the 15 hp models there that you'll ever be likely to want to know.

Check your sparks properly with spark tester, improvised if necessary. They should jump 7/16"

If neither spark good then suspect the power pack. But check the kill switch if no sparks at all.
If one ok and one no good suspect one of the coils. Swap them over to confirm.

You'll need a peak reading meter to check the pulse going from power pack to coils.

Good sparks, then check compression before looking at carb.

Do not use starting fluid ... no oil!

Check your compression, it should have fired up with starting fluid. You could also verify that the key in the crank isn't sheared which will throw timing off.

Re: 15HP Evinrude Problems

I have already checked and ruled out the coils, both are putting off spark. This starting fluid I had was for 2 cycle motors, i guess it has oil added with it. I am guessing timing is right TDC lines up with marking on top engine weight. And it has great compression, you can feel each compression stroke when turning it over. My best guess, but I dont know, is that the mag or module isn't generating enough voltage or current to give the coil packs enough to make a usable spark. Because earlier when I pulled them out and tested them, you really had to look to find the spark while turning the motor over. Seemed like it should have been more.
