15hp Evinrude Water Pump - Rebuilt correctly?

I recently bought a 1983 15hp Evinrude and decided to replace the impeller in the water pump (just in case). It ran fine before and sprayed plenty of water out of the pee-hole. Some water came out of a drain hole on the lower front side of the lower unit, and some leaked out of the shift rod grommet too.

After cleaning out some light oxidation inside, replacing the impeller, water pump outlet grommet, and changing the gear oil, I noticed not as much water seems to come out of the pee-hole.

It's a fast trickle at idle and improves a little as you rev it up. It doesn't seem like the steady, solid stream it was before. On the lower end port side drain hole, there is a solid stream/spray that comes out, more than before. There was no corrosion blocking this hole before, so I don't think my cleaning is causing this increase in flow. I carefully seated the water pump outlet grommet to the brass water tube, but a little water still leaks out of the shift rod grommet.

The shift rod grommet is over the chamber that has the drain hole that is spraying out more water than before. Did my water system get a clog in it somehow (seemed fine before) and is over-pressurizing this forward chamber in the lower end? Water is still coming out of the pee-hole and I can hold my finger on the top end water jacket for 3-5 seconds, so it's not overheating. Is it ok to run my engine? I've been running my engine on a stand with water muffs hooked up for cooling. I'm pretty sure I bent back the impeller blades in the right direction when I installed it. Thanks for any suggestions!

running on muffs, water comes out all kinds of places -- the hole on front especially.

question: you said "After cleaning out some light oxidation inside..." are you refering to inside the pump housing? Any corrosion, scoring, even light discoloration in there means replace it. Also the housing gasket, while you're at it.

I cleaned out light corrosion inside the water and exhaust chambers in the lower unit. The inside of the water pump had no corrosion. The corrosion didn't seem very bad, especially considering it's a 26yr old motor that's been run in salt water. I'm just wondering if enough water is running all the way through the system and coming out the pee-hole.
