I bought a used 15hp mariner used (late 1980's maybe early 1990"s) and have some questions on cooling. I plan on using this motor on my duck boat which will put it through some muck. so here goes
1. do these have thermostats on them?
2. can I put a tempurature sensor on this motor to be able to tell if I'm plugged up and overheating? If so how?
3. can I drill out the pee hole a little to allow more muck to pass through it.

1) Yes.
2) Better off with a water pressure gauge. It will let you know before you cook the engine.
3) The telltale hole is just that, a telltale. Most of the water from the cooling system is expelled down through the exhaust system to cool the exhaust gases. If you drill out the telltale you'll change the amount of water cooling the exhaust and could end up burning something in the driveshaft housing.

C
