my rude is a 1981 so shes got some years and hours on her! but since ive bought the motor 8 years ago its always been hard to start her, especialy once ive ran it for a bit. The motor will spit and sputter for a 30 or so seconds then clears up eventualy and idles. when i say idles its a rough idle and if im not carefull it will die and the whole process starts over again. thank god for electric start!!! but once i get above idle RPMs it runs like new! Could it be running to lean? or to rich? or is something elts to blame here?

i ran into a guy at the boat ramp and we got to talkin and he also has a few engines similar to mine in year and said that my year of motors naturaly ran hot from the factory brand new. and when they ran hot the gas would boil in the carb, basicaly flooding the engine. and that was why it was harder for me to start my engine warm rather than cold.

any help would be great.
thank you so much in advance.

ive never heard of a motor that boilds gas in the bowl of a carb. Ignore that advice and remove the carb and clean and rebuild it. Replace fuel lines with ethynol resistant ones.

ya ive never heard of that either...but i wanted to check with the forum first.

but how could the carb be the problem when it runs fine once i get above 750rpms? ive had carb problems before and it effected the whole rpm band not just a section. I could very well be wrong.

also ive heard that older outboards hate the 10% ethynol in gas these days, and i only run 93 octane in my motor. could ethynol be a suspect in my case?

Hmmm, High Speed !!! No

The low speed circuit is where I would be looking ..
A complete carb cleaning would be in order here. I'm sure it will run just fine.

Re: 15hp rude has trouble starting up after running.

but it only has trouble starting up after its been run for a good while.

i just went outside to make sure it wasnt running to lean or to rich and i had it adjusted perfectly and the engine fired right up and idled like it was brand new.

but i swear if i try to start it after its been ran around in the river for a bit it would take some time to get going. it almost sounds like its flooded while im cranking it with the starter.

Could still be a carb problem if it has not been stripped and cleaned properly with a new kit fitted. Check the float level and height setting.
If the carb is good then it is most likely a bad or incorrect plug fitted.
