Just bought this boat with a 15hp outboard on it. I believe the year of the engine is a 1989. started it up last night and it does not pump water. my question is does it need to warm up first or should it pump water right away. I have it sitting in a drum of water. I only let it run for a few mintues I got nervous when I did not see any water coming out so I shut it down.

you did the right thing by shutting it down. Its time to change the water pump/impeller and probably do a thermostat for sure. Also you can run that on muffs - no need for the drum of water.

Hi
I had similar problems on my Evinrude 15hp from the same year.

My impellor had a split in one of the blades but also there was a blockage in the pipe where the water comes out. Get a compressed air line and gently blow some air back through the pee hole.

Good luck

Wow this thread started in may of 2003, Anyways you can always use a piece of wire if you dont have an air compressor. I would start the engine and disconnect tube thats hooked up to the motor and shove the wire in and out a few times and water should eventually pour out the pee hole.
