Hey there,

I'm going to try again to get this posted correctly. A few of you guys helped me figure out how to post my pics so that they could be viewed by all. Let me know if it works this time.
So, as said before, I am doing a full restoration on a 1988 16' "Magnum" Flats boat. Based on some research, Magnum was a company back in the 80's out of Dixie Co., FL. I guess they went out of business but they made a few pretty nice center consoles. I must say, it is the perfect boat for the flats, yet it has a deep enough v to be stable running across the bay if need be. This is my first boat project, but I have some skills in repair being that I restored a 1970 mustang coupe grande from the bottom up when I was only 16. I need as much help as possible with this boat project though. Lets just say I'm a noob when it comes to boat "terms" and parts and the whole thing. Hence me being on here. So, all that jiber jabber to say this, I will be updating what I have done and what still needs to be done (to my knowledge) and hopefully you guys can fill in the gaps.

Heres what she started as before I broke her down:boat2.jpg

I bought the boat for a steal from a kid that ran out of time and money. He bought the boat from a guy for $1400 and put another grand into it replacing the transom and buying tons of parts that he never even put on (which he threw in with the deal). Needless to say, I spent $500 for it with the trailer, title in hand that day.

Heres what she looked like after I broke her down a little bit:boatone.jpgIMG00011.jpgIMG00013.jpg

I removed both seats, since it looked like a bass boat lol, and I am now doing some work filling the holes and fixing 20+ years of damage to her. I am close to getting ready to repainting the deck and putting on some new nonskid on the front and rear casting decks, as well as replacing all the hinges and hardware for all of them. *Any suggestions on where to buy hardware online??

Also forgot to mention, He gave me a 50 hp mercury motor to go with it. He said the tilt and trim was broken, but I have been too focused on the hull to even figure out what year the motor is. Its still in the back of my truck. I will give an update once I find out.

Anyways, I will post more pics as I go.

Thanks for the help in advance.

Well, I pulled the cap and looked at all the stringers and everything was solid. It looked as if they had been replaced before though, they have been glassed over, but they looked brand new.

AWESOME find. depending on that motor you got, you may have literally stolen this, better make sure it wasn't the kids neighbors boat :) i tease. Seriously though, really nice boat, really nice price, from what i can see, no structural work to be done. Just got power it and rig it and shine it up.Good find.. i see you are in FL, maybe we need to do some fishing :) :) :D

$500!!!! I'll give you $550 right now :) You got an awesome deal! I agree, as long as the stringers and transom are solid, slap a motor on her and hit the water. Congrats!

Any time you want to go fishing I'm down. Did I mention I am in the 10,000 islands area? 10 min from the Everglades, 5 min from the Gulf.

And Walcot,

I must say I agree with the steal part. I got the whole boat, galvanized trailer, mercury classic 45 hp motor for 500 bucks. Did I mention it had a title, and tons of parts the guy never installed?? Rub rail, battery boxes, tons of electrical components, and so on. (Plus the guy even helped me load the motor in the back of my truck.)

I've bought tons of stuff for the boat so far and I'm in the process of rebuilding after I totally broke her down to see what I was dealing with. I'm in the middle of tons of work and school so of course i've had no time to do anything, but hopefully next week I can get going on finishing up resurfacing the deck with noskid and rebuilding the livewells. I'll post pics asap.

I'm so jealous of you guys. I have to trailer my boat 30 mins to the closest river and 40 for a lake

Sorry man. This is The major reason I love FL. if you look at us on a good map, or from a plane, you would swear we were some kind of island chain..i could pretty much blindfold myself, drive till i feel like stopping and be confident that when i unhook my boat it is gonna land in some kind of water. :) :)

Anytime you're down this way, we'll make an effort to go make a grand slam out of it (snook, tarpon, redfish all in one day)

Re: 16' Flats Boat Full Restoration HELP

Alright guys, making progress on the boat for sure. Today I finished all the body work. I went to Home Depot and bought all the stuff to build my new jackplate. Since I'm a college student, I decided to go the route of making my own. It will be a manual adjust with 8 height settings. It is based off of some plans that a guy did with a Dillon Racing inspiration on another forum. His was only for a 25 hp motor, mine is a 45, so I'll be adjusting mine to fit my needs.

Here's a diagram of what I'm thinking.
transom note 2.jpgtransom note.jpg
Heres a pic of the guy's that I'm basing mine from.

transom view2.jpgtransomview.jpg

Here's what I bought:
4 foot 3inx3in aluminum angle iron 1/4in thick
4 1in stainless bolt
4 2.5in stainless bolt (All bolts, and hardware was 3/8in.)
6 4 in stainless bolt
15 locking nuts
15 fender washers
15 nuts (haha never thought I'd say I bought 15 nuts.)
1/16 in stainless 1ftx8in plate (for reinforcement on the transom side so I don't have the bolts pull through the transom when running...oops)

I spent right at $100.00 for all this including a new bit to drill the holes, and some cutting wheels for my grinder.

I plan on doing all the work tomorrow, so keep checking in. I will post pics of how it turns out.

Re: 16' Flats Boat Full Restoration HELP

Hi fishinick. I'm way up in Tallahassee. Glad you're making progress. I couldn't see you're previous attachments, but I would suggest you use all SS hardware whenever possible to minimize corrosion. Some 3M 5200 applied to all of the fasteners would probably be a good idea too. I think actually sell it at HD/Lowes these days. The SS hardware does cost a bit more up front, but it's well worth it down the road. Sounds like we gotta get the Gulf Coast armada going. We've got everything from the panhandle to the glades covered. Congrats again on the sweet score. Can't wait to see how she turns out.

I'm jealous too! I want a flats boat (16' or so) for going up into Florida Bay and the Everglades. My boat ramp is 3 minutes away from my house IF the traffic is heavy and I catch the red light! :D There is actually a closer ramp to me, but its way shallow for my Fibra.

I believe I fixed the attachments now so everyone can see them. And I wrote down galvinized yesterday for the hardware, but I was mistaken. I actually bought all stainless because it was cheaper at HomeDepot. Glad to see I bought the right one. (Thanks kfa4303) Also, the 5200 comment..I should only apply that to the parts that are permanently fixed right? because it is a manually adjustable jack plate, I should leave the 5200 off of the actual adjusting bolts right?

And As for the Gulf Coast Armada. I say yes. We should all have a meet up sometime. Say Boca Grande..??

And as for you NetDoc, you can be jealous of the flats boat, but based on your location (Key Largo) I think all of us should be envying over you.

Re: 16' Flats Boat Full Restoration HELP

Glad you got the SS hardware after all. Yeah, you only need to put the 3M 5200 on non-moving, through hull and structureal fasteners. Just take the bolts out, one at a time and coat them in the 5200, then reinstall. A little goes a long way, and It's pretty gloopy stuff, so have plenty of paper towels handy. Acetone works well for clean up too. Unless you buy the fast drying version, it takes several days for it to fully cure, but once it does it should last a long, long time. congrats again on the progress. keep us posted.
