16 to 17 Volts on '74 Evinrude?

Hello. I have a 1974 85hp Evinrude, model 85493. We've had quite the electrical problems, but thought we had it figured out. It was running good for about 6 hours of use, great power throughout the rpm spectrum. Then just on our last trip around the lake it would all of a sudden lose power at high rpm and go down to about 3/4 speed. Then once we idled down(it idled fine) and sped back up it was ok for a bit, then the high rpm power started coming and going. You would be goin along at 3/4 speed and all of a sudden it would kick in. Is this an electrical or fuel problem? One thing we noticed, the voltage across the battery while running goes from 16.5 to 17.2 depending on rpm. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

supafly1232

normal charging voltage for a "12 volt" battery is 13.6 - 13.8 volts. I think you have a rectifier/voltage regulstor problem. I hope you have not burned up other components with the high voltage.

Bruce

Sorry I should have asked you to double check the voltage with another volt meter before you go any further.

Bruce

Yeah, we've meant to check the voltage with a different meter(we used the depthfinder). However, after sitting for 10 min, the voltage went down to about 12.5, so we think the reading is accurate. Someone else told us there is no voltage regulator on the system, only a rectifier turning AC voltage to DC; therefore higher voltage is possible. They told us to try the power pack, think this is a solution? Thanks.
