Hi all I have a 165 1971 merc. Just tested it out since full rebuild. It starts ok, shifts into gear with out stalling but when I open the throttle it cuts out. I have striped the carb and found the check ball valve stuck in the accelorater pump chamber. I hope this is it. Any other ideas ? Can any one help with the float height

Could also be advance weights in the distributor if the carb fix doesn't do the trick.
mike

If you slowly ease the throttle open does it still cut out? Does it cut out and die or just stumble? The check ball stuck is probably the problem. What caused it to stick? Be sure to clean all passages. Whatever may have caused the ball to stick may also be plugging passages and shorting feul.
Good luck and let us know the outcome. If you haven't done it yet I would suggest a carb kit. See how this works first.

Achris, is the height taken from the top of the float chamber or the gasket face.
Deputydawg, the check ball has a small burr on it. Maybe I did this when I cleaned the carb. This engine has only done 120 hrs from new, and last ran in 1976. I striped it and the only thing that needed to be changed was the water pump.

Gasket in position.... "Distance from air horn gasket to toe of float at the sharp edge of the seam" (quoted directly form Merc manual)

Re: 165 cutting out

If it has been sitting idle for this long it is possible the accelerator pump diaphram dried out. I recently rebuild a brand new carb, it was on the engine for 6 months or so then the engine sat for 4 years without running. The accelerator pump dried and had very small crack.
Your on the right trail though, should be a minor fix it sounds like.
