My Merc is making a bad tapping sound under the valve cover. Probably a tappet going bad? I need to know the setting for the tappets on this engine. The serial number is: 4460527.
Does anyone know offhand? Or know of a good link for the specs on this engine?
The sound is so loud.... could it be another problem?
Thanks....

Sounds like you have a lifter that has gone bad and is no longer holding oil pressure- if one goes others are not far behind- general rule change them all. The best adjustment is running- back off nut until clatter starts then slowly!! no more than 1/4 turn at a time until noise just stops - this is zero lash position- then 1/4 turn pause until engine runs smoothly again then another 1/4 turn until you have reached a total of 3/4 turns- is factory spec this serial #. If you do replace all lifters there is a sequence you have to follow to get zero lash to start with so that the engine will start and run. If you decide to go that way post it and I will give you the sequence.

Your comment "Moving to I/O" lacks clarity and therefore makes you look like you are mocking me for being ignorant about this engine.
I need specificity and clarity thank you.
Skiph

To do the non running preliminary adjustment, just follow the ignition rotor around the distributor cap. When the rotor is pointing to a particular plug's wire that's the one to adjust. Spin or twitch the pushrod whith one hand, while loosening and tightening the adjuster with the other. Note when the play is removed then maybe 1/4 to 1/2 turn tighter.

Then fire it up with cover off and adjust them running.

As described above.

Excellent posts! :)

I too have a 1975 Mercruiser 165 I6, and thankfully, mine still runs strong with no problems (knock on wood).

http://members.aol.com/ammonc/165engine.jpg

Here is a photo of my old fresh water cooled 165hp Mercruiser. What a rugged ol' beast of an engine! I always use the lead additive when gassing up, so it keeps the valves and everything else protected from getting harmed with normal unleaded fuel.

Butch A.

Butch.... Mercrusier started using harden valve seats in 1974. Therefore you dont need lead additives. But use it if you like.

The lifters may not be bad. Skiph mentions that the noise in under the valve cover. The lifters on an in line six (165 hp) are down lower on the engine block with a cover over them.

Skip may just have a loose rocker arm.

Regardless, the adjustment methods mentioned will work.

Adjust them first. Lifter failures on those old straight sixes are pretty rare.

WOW! I want to thank all of you who have taken the time to give me the specific info needed to fix my engine problem (and my "posting problems").
I've learned a ton about this engine and feel much better about working on it.
Many, many thanks to you all........

I looked for that posting but only found your advice on a 140hp Chrysler (?) .... nothing about setting the rocker arms.
I will work on the old bugger tomorrow and definitely could use your thoughts.
Thanks,
Skiph
