You haven't seen any oil anywhere on the engine?

well,
for water intrusion, drive shaft bellows, shift cable bellows, gimble housing transom seal come to my mind. hose leak on the engine? broke block? broke manifold? water drain plugs?
for oil, valve cover seal, lifter cover seal, trim system leak (my '75 uses engine oil in the trim system). or i personally had an elusive oil leak. took over a year to decide where it was at. it was the bottom of the oil pan that had rusted through and dripped oil real slow. the leak was near the oil drain plug which also could leak oil. but in my case it was actually the pan that leaked.

remember, leaks always run downhill.

best i can come up with. next comes the looking....

There's a lot of possibilities. Perhaps you should first determine if the water is coming in without the engine running. That would narrow down the list. If that is the case, then pull the out drive.
