165 L6 Bushings need replacement?

I'm getting ready to re-install my MC165's in a '72 Bertram. While everything is out I think it might be a good time to ensure the engine mounts are dampening properly. There are 2 rear bushings and 1 front bushing per engine. Plus a few thick rubber washers. The bushings don't seem to have much play in them, but perhaps replacing them will smooth out engine vibrations? Is there a test? What should I look for in a visual inspection (cracking, hardness)? Or should I just replace them (bushings and washers) as a matter of "while I'm in there"?

replace them. however your in-line 6 is one of the smoothest engines there is on the planet. if you have vibrations, make sure you are running on all 6 cylinders

The L6's out for rebuilds? If not, might do a compression test to determine baseline wear.

Rear mounts will settle over time. If the center core of the mount is even with the bottom of the housing they should be replaced also especially if you put a tapered punch it the bolt hole and can see the rubber separating from the core by prying it around.

Unlike a V engine, the rear bushings on an inline a take a lot of weight. As the engines are already out and the mounts are not expensive and relatively easy to replace, I'd do them on spec. One of the very few times I'd replace a part 'because I can'...

Compression was tested prior to removal. They are out for a transom replacement. :)

Wow, great opportunity....

Ditch the MC1 drives and transom housings. Find a couple of 3l Gen II engines (1991 and later) that were cracked over winter and convert your 165s to Gen II...

Nice rebuild on the transom....
