We'll I tried all the advice on how to get rid of the lifter noise .... and the clacking still comes and goes. It IS coming from the top of the engine and near the first cylinder. I cannot pinpoint the exact lifter by listening and neither could an engine mechanic.
He suggested I pull the lifters and find the one that is damaged. None are damaged. None show any "give" when I push on them. They all look "near new". All the pushrods are straight.
Does anyone have any idea what in the world is causing this noise problem????????
Many thanks,

Are they adjustable? If not, just replace them all. There could be a cam problem also. Engines that sit for extended time tend to rust the camshaft, then when restarted it wipes out the cam. Hope this isnt the issue with yours though.

I don't know if the lifters themselves are adjustable. It's an old 1976 inline and they had just introduced hydraulic lifters so chances are they are not adjustable.
The engine didn't sit for a long time... and the noise doesn't emanate from inside the engine. The noise definitely comes from up top.
I'm beginning to wonder of one of the rocker arms might be askew, even tho they all look okay.
Thanks,

Yes they're adjustable.Turn them 3/4-1 full turn after you loosen them and slowly tighten until the "clacking"noise stops.Check the valve stem for side to side movement.Could be a worn valve guide. Also check the hot air tube going to the carb.It passes through the manifold and can be mistaken for a lifter noise.
