Went to start my boat to start the season and it cranked fine. For some reason I thought I would cycle the shifter forward then reverse but it wouldn't go into reverse. Now it won't crank at all. Choke still works and gauges come on but no crank, click nothing. Will go into forward but feels tight. No reverse at all. Was cranking before I did this. Brand new battery. What did I break. Everything was fine last year.

I'm thinking that you mean you have a 1976 vintage 135 hp engine. Hard to tell from your description.. Possible something is amiss in the control box. Maybe a tooth on the gear has broken inside on the shift lever assy. That could make for hard shifting. Also, if the handle does not center properly (for neutral) the neutral safety switch could be misaligned which may prevent it from cranking. You could do a test. Unplug the control box wire harness at the engine. Jump start the starter with a set of automotive jumper cables and a strong battery. Once it cranks, check for spark on each plugwire. Be careful, as you don't want it to actually start-you'll have no way to shut if off.
