170 Alternator conversion

So I'm only getting 12.6 volts running the OEM setup. Going to make a bracket and install an old delco 10/12SI one wire setup. Im guessing I can just unhook the water cooled regulator and tape up the connections to disable the old system?

Where in my harness can I hook up the #1 terminal to get the indicator light, or just disregard it?

Thanks as always!

Re: 170 Alternator conversion

Thanks Eric! I'm a little confused on that schematic though, shouldnt the Batt terminal on the alternator be full-time to the battery? Looks like it's attached to the start terminal of the starter solenoid or am I missing something?

thanks, john.

Re: 170 Alternator conversion

Alternators are always wired to the starter like that on an OEM marine engine. No need to go directly to the battery. If you have a battery switch, the alternator wouldn't be disconnected from the battery when you shut the switch off.
The only time you would go some where else is if you had a battery isolator. Then the alternator would go to the ALT terminal of the isolator.

Here is an example of a low mount conversion on my 470.

The alternator output goes to the same terminal on the starter as the positive battery cable. The battery is charged thru the positive cable.
