175 hp Evinrude year

i am planning on looking at a 175 hp V6 evinrude on sunday, is there any way to get an idea when the engine was manufature by the serial # ? the current owner is not the original owner and isn't sure if the engine is original to the 1995 boat. i don't want to buy a very old engine without knowing.<br />thanks

N.J...... OMC's code is the word "INTRODUCES" whereas every letter stands for a number such as:<br /><br />I=1, N=2, T=3, etc etc (You get the idea).<br /><br />It is not the serial number that tells the tale, it is the "Model" number that you want to see.<br /><br />The Evinrude 175hp model numbers start out with something like E175STLCEB or E175TXLCE, something of that nature. Within the model number, look for the letters that would be within the word "INTRODUCES".<br /><br />Notice that within the model numbers I listed above, the only two letters that are next to each other that would be contained in OMC's code are the two letters "CE", which would stand for "89" (1989). If you're uncertain about deciphering the model number, let us know what it is and we'll do it for you.

i looked at the engine and the only model number i could find was 17545*9S. i could not read the middle number but it definately ended in 9S. the serial number, which i didn't get a chance towrite down started with a "j". any help on the year with this info?<br />thanks
