175 Johnson prop shaft replacement

I have a 175 Ocean Runner, 1995 model J175SLEOM. The prop shaft is bent and needs to be replaced. My plan is to disassemble the lower unit, buy all of the needed parts and seals, then take it to a boat shop for reassembly. I am assuming that the gears would have to be pressed off of the shaft, then patterned again.

Is the correct prop shaft for this motor P/N 435022? Is the GLM equivalent P/N 2936 OK to use from a quality standpoint?

Forward gear is part of the prop shaft. It doesn't come off. You need special tools to disassemble the LU. Giant snap-ring pliers and a special wrench to get to the driveshaft gear.

My mistake. I don't know what I was thinking about. I was playing online poker while I was visiting this forum. Still need some special tools for disassembly. A good mechanic can take it apart cheaper than you can buy the tools. But if you can get it apart, there is no reason you can't re-assemble it yourself if nothing is damaged but the prop shaft.

Re: 175 Johnson prop shaft replacement

Thanks for the reply. The carrier is stuck in the casing, I broke a piece of 5/16" allthread trying to get it out with my Snap On puller. I may be able to get it using grade 8 bolts that are 11" or so long. I'll probably just take it in for a rebuild.

Any reccomendations for a good lower unit mechanic in the Houston area?

Use a hand held propane torch with a blow torch tip to heat the outer aluminum casing in order to free the carrier assy. Use a heavy duty slide hammer with a hook to yank the carrier out.

If you can locate a shaft on this site, great. If not, contact me at my address below.
