I have 1997 Sugar Sand with a 175 Mercury 175 Sport jet Engine. I just got, and it has been really hard to start, I had attached a external water source to test the engine, when I pulled the plugs I noticed water comming from the bottom plug on the Right Bank, no other plugs. Suspect a blowen head Gasket, could this be the caused and was it posable that the gasket blew because of overheating by a defective Thermostat?

Wait a minute Robert!!!!!!

Was the cylinder full of water to the point that it ran out of the plug hole?
Is that piston moving up and down properly? Check it by moving the flywheel while in neutral (and the engine off).
Have you checked the compression of all the cylinders?

With the spark plug out of the engine, and a water hose hooked up to the external water test hose (the hose adapter for running the engine out of the warer) water was comming out of the cyl, when i cranked the engine over. Befor i removed the plug the cyl filled with water and prevented the engine from turning over.
I had firs taken this boat to the lake, and it started with a great deal of effort, the engine ran but would not idle, so took home for this instection.

Pull the head and see. Hopefully that's all it is. Head gaskets aren't expensive and all you need is a few regular tools and a torque wrench when you put the head back on. I guess you know why it was for sale now.
