I have a 1990 Johnson 175 (crossover).
The block is bad and needs to be replaced. Can anyone tell me what other power heads I can bolt on? (if any)....
Example: can I switch to a 175 looper or 200?

Thank you....

Re: 175 Power Head

Welcome!!

What you have is a 2.6 liter crossflow. They were made in 235 configurations and 175. Both are the same. The 235 is crankshaft rated and the 175's are propshaft rated. There was a 2.6 XP/GT which was a performance version. All the above will bolt on and use your existing dressing (carbs, intake, ignition etc).

There was also a 1978 & 79 235 that was a 2.5 liter version that will bolt on.

None of the loopers, either 60 degree or 90 degree will bolt on.

The 2.5 liter crossflows with the flat exhaust plate will not bolt up. Your 2.6 has the tuned exhaust or whats commonly called the "bubble back" exhaust.

Any crossflow that has the same looking exhaust plates as yours will bolt up and work.

That being said -- whats wrong with yours that it cannot be rebuilt?

Re: 175 Power Head

Block around the sleeves is severely corroded. Some of the sleeves are badly scored.
I realize it could be re-sleeved, but the corrosion (I’m thinking) means the block needs to be replaced.

I want a good reliable motor, but the hull is 1990 (Chris Craft, CC – Great Boat)…and putting a new motor on it is not cost effective.

They have some good suppliers here at iboats. Just make sure you get a good tech to install it and do all the other things that go along with replacing a powerhead -- water pump, carb cleaning, check the fuel delivery system etc.

Great boat!
