Recently this season my 1998 yamaha 175 2 stroke has been stalling after long runs when i throttle down to idle. Runs fine all other times. plugs look a little oily. Put new plugs in this season however only burnt off fogging oil from lay up on old plugs for 3 minues before installing new ones. When i started up at dock on new set quite a bit of smoke remained before finally clearing . Installed 10 micron filter and ran stabil through fresh gas before winter layup . Have new set of plugs and filter which i will install this week , WOULD APPRECIATE ANY ADVICE. THANKS JB.

sounds like you need to clean the carbs, is there any "sneezing", that would indicate a lean situation. a good carb cleaning never hurts, and almost always results in a smoother running engine.i have cleaned mine and run it only to realize that prior to cleaning it really wasn't running that well , take your time it is not difficult, take a pic if you are concerned about reassamble, good luck;)

maybe your idle is set a bit low, causing the stall. idle should be in the 750 to 850 RPM range. idle is very easy to adjust with the screw on linkage. it's worth a look before going into carbs. Good luck!

Re: 175 yamaha stalling

My 115 yamaha would run PERFECT at every throttle position other then idle. At idle it would cough or sneeze and stall. I purchased the repair manual and rebuilt the carbs (not that difficult) and found my idle jets were clogged. I cleaned them with some compressed air and she runs like a new motor. I would suggest you rebuild the carbs. I can tell you I was very nervous about the job but it wasent that hard.

Good luck
