Got my boat out from storage and now the trim is not working up or down. Batteries are brand new. All i was getting at first was a click sound when hitting the trim switch either from the front of the boat, the throttle, or the rear trim switch. Opened the case and only the top selenoid was clicking. I have replaced both selenoids now and still a no go. But the bottom one i replaced is now clicking. I tried tapping on the trim pump motor and still a no go. Also did a rapid clicking of the trim switch to try and wake things up with no luck. I am not sure what else to look for or do. Any suggestions? I have attached some pictures of what i am seeing. The little round thing, i have no idea what that is that is mounted on the outside of the lower unit, the wire runs to the back trim switch. The enclosed device by my starter batter i believe to be the relay? And i found a small hose that is just hanging and not connected at the other end by anything?

Re: 175HP Mercury Trim/Tilt issues

here is what i would do..
get you a couple pieces of wire one to hook directly up to the battery.
one for neg and one for positive.

locate the input lines for your trim motor. twist, screw or otherwise hook up the negative wire so its always grounded.
now take your hot wire and touch it directly to your input for your trim motor. make sure you DO NOT touch both at the same time you should have one green one blue- (green down) - (blue up) if the trim motor should turn and move the engine. if your motor does not respond then your trim motor is bad, get an aftermarket one for under $250.
if the motor takes off - then you have either bad solenoid or relays, get yourself a short piece of wire and jump accross them to find the rascal giving you fits.

here is the thing- since neither up nor down work chances are, it is not an individual relay or solenoid, they usually click whether they work or not but you just dont notice it because the trim motor is also making noise at the same time. so with the motor making no noise all you hear is the click.

there is also the slim chance you have a corroded common ground wire. thats why i said to get yourself 2 pieces of wire from the beginning.

Ok thank you. So basically from the picture of the up/down solenoids, you see the green and blue wires. So i would disconnect them from the solenoids and the black ground and connect them directly to the battery? I am assuming the green and blue wires would be positive? Do i need to disconnect all the wires on the solenoid to keep from blowing anything while i test. I had this problem last year, but not as bad. The solenoids just clicked, than i kept hitting the trim switch and all of a sudden the motor started working. Now this year that is not working. I heard i could take the motor to a auto electronic shop and have it rebuilt for cheap?

Ayuh,... You have corrosion in the wiring, or it's ends...
Remove, clean, reinstall,+ grease all the Ends,+ it'll probably work Just Fine...

Re: 175HP Mercury Trim/Tilt issues

Scratching my head now on the best way to remove the trim motor. If you look at the picture above, the other screw is at the opposite side, which is by the wall in the back corner, which i am unable to get to it seems like without have to take everything apart. which is what i do not want to do. Any suggestions on removing the trim motor so i can have someone clean it up for me.

Well the trim motor appears bad. Hooked it directly to battery and nothing happened. Found out i will need a flex socket extension to remove the back screw. I may just want to replace the motor entirely but am having trouble finding one to replace it. Its the eaton style motor which is the rectangular one, 3 wire. i have a 175HP engine. Or could just taking the motor to a repair place work to. Just do not want to have to worry about the motor going out again on me for a long time.
