I am rebuilding a '71 18 HP motor. (18102s) I don't know a lot about outboards, but I am a wrench of sorts. I notice a lot of play in the mag armature plate. This is linked to the throttle to advance the spark, but at partial throttle it seems to have a lot of play in it. I can move the armature back and forth probably 10 degrees or more. Is this normal? The linkage has all the play in it but I don't see how to fix it except to replace all the components. How bad is this play going to affect the performance of the motor? It seems to move 10 degrees of so when just off idle. Will the effect of the magnet in the flywheel keep it tight and prevent it from moving back and forth? Thanks, Bob

If the play is in the linkage, check the nylon shoulder pin at the base of the throttle arm where it goes into the bottom throttle gear. Sometimes they can get sloppy...

hi.
look at the page :http://www.crowleymarine.com/johnson-evinrude/parts/29631.cfm
use a hamer and saml puncher to punch the lement no 10 in places symetricaly equals at 0, 3,6,9 hgour places.just a small punch. this punch will increse friction beetwen this ring and timin plate-no 6 from page http://www.crowleymarine.com/johnson-evinrude/parts/29635.cfm

I think I understand what you are saying. But the armature plate seems to fit fine.

I will check that. I do think the linkage is where all the looseness is. Thanks.
