18 hp not charging

I have a 1964 18hp, with electric start. i have ordered manual but wont see it till next week. engine starts and runs good, but i am not reading a voltage increase at battery. wiring is connected thru plug on motor, connection point at solenoid box all connected, dont have wiring diagram yet too check. where wood i start????

The only voltage draw is when the starter is actually engaged. Even a small 12 volt battery should last several days of normal operation. Those motors did not have a charging system.

It's not charging because it has no charging system. Some 40 hp's of that year were equipped with a belt drive DC generator.
The only thing that a battery is for on that motor is to run the starter motor. The engine ignition system requires no external power source.
