Fuel tank vent open? Could it be clogged up; how about all fuel line connections tight and not leaking air in? Fuel filter clogged up? Just thingsa to look at. Good luck

How old is the primer ball, it may need replacing. I had a similar problem a couple years ago, replaced the primer and ran perfectly. Also check all fuel line connections and carb gaskets for possible leaks.

i dont know how old it is, i went ahead and ordered a new one. also the tank vent seems clear ill blow threw it and verify. but the cap doesnt hold a suction at all so i dont think its getting vapor locked. how do i check for air leaks? pump it up and see how long it stays firm? thanks again

Yes, pump the primer, make sure it gets firm, watch, listen & smell for leaks along the fuel line at all connections. Remove motor cover & watch for leaks around carburetors fuel connections, etc...
If all seems tight (no visible leaks) then it could be the primer ball going bad. Mine would run great for about 10-15 minutes and then it'd start bogging down at WOT. Turns out the primer ball was collapsing under the pressure from the fuel pump.
I hope that's all it is... easy fix!
Best wishes,
Scuba

Ok thanks. I think the primer is orginal. Where can I buy s rebuild kit fo for my fuel pump? Is it something that needs to be cleaned out ? Thanks

If you constantly prime the fuel hose bulb and the engine runs fine at WOT, then you may have weak fuel pump(s). The engine may be consuming fuel faster than the pumps can supply it. Bombardier does not make a factory fuel pump repair kit for those pumps. I am sure there is a reason why they don't provide a rebuild kit for any of these old V6 pumps.... If you find the pumps are the culprit, you'll have to order new ones. If you order the original factory part numbers, you will get two different pumps. Actually, the pumps are the same number, but one comes with a short "j" shaped hose, so it's part number is different. Upper pump 388555. Lower pump 393870. None of the original hoses on this engine are rated to handle ethanol fuels, so you might as well consider replacing them at the same time.

maybe i have a bad fuel line somewhere, i replaced one last year but never took it out before so who knows what it was doing. exp if they are as old as the boat then theres a good chance one or more could be bad, you made a good point with the ethonal. and should i get rid of the plastic style hose clamps that are currently on there and switch to the metal , worm gear style clamps? thanks

Re: 185 hp two stroke fuel issus

I've seen black bits of hose migrate down into the carb jets-on some of these old engines. The ethanol is a sort of hidden problem, as it is not really evident till you have a running issue. I don't like the use of zip ties on fuel hoses. Stainless worm clamps with the slits in the band tend to chew the hose up over time-not recommended. The plastic clamps are the best. Cheap and re-useable. Some of the fuel hoses under the cowling have extreme bends in them. Those are factory heat-formed to flow fuel around a sharp bend. The factory has actual part numbers for those hoses. If you bend bulk hose sharply, it will kink at the bend, causing a fuel restriction. Order new, replacement hoses under the original factory part number. They will be made with 2013 hose.

Re: 185 hp two stroke fuel issus

I found a badly dry rotted fuel line and replaced it boat still acts the same . Sometimes it will take off and run great but most of the time it will accelerate and slow down a little then pick up again and keep on doin that . At lower rpms it runs fine . I loaded it on the trailer and it stalled out I didn't try and restart it . I got home and the plastic fuel bowl on the out side of engine was almost empty so I pulled the line off to the tank and blew through it it was clear. Fuel filter was almost half empty. Does this info help at all ? Primer blub was always soft never firm I ordered A new one but it didn't come in time is there any way I can check the fuel pump ?

Re: 185 hp two stroke fuel issus

What happens when you constantly prime the fuel hose bulb when at WOT? That's the check for a weak fuel pump. FYI, those plastic fuel bowls are problems waiting to happen. All of them warp over time and won't seat properly (flat) to the underside of the carb body. When they warp, they leak fuel, even worse, the can cause the engine to run lean, depending on where the warp is. For a while, OMC made replacement bowl kits, replacing the plastic bowls with the better all aluminum ones. These kits may not be available still, but the bowls are.

It's not.on the carb its on the side of engine its clear and has s fuel line into it and then one to the fuel pump .if the blub is primed then ran it will run.ok for a few minutes priming the blub while running helps slightly but the blub.doesn't really get firm
