As I was dropping thge lower unit on my '66 Evinrude 18hp (18602C) today, I noticed it looked a lot like the lower unit on my '57 Johnson 10hp (QD18). Both have the 5 bolt pattern and similar (if not the same) prop size. Are these units interchangable? Will the shifter, water tube and driveshaft line up? If so is the 10 hp unit strong enough for the 18? thx...

I have a QD 16, and a 17, an FD 11 (18hp), and just sold a 55 15hp LU. The FD box and the QD box are the same. Can't remember on the Rude 15, but I think it was the same too.

But is that the same all the way up to '66 as I have a QD19 ('58) and they went to the 4 bolt pattern...

I believe they went to the 4 bolt pattern on the 10hp in 1959. Maybe 1958, but I don't think so. The 4 and 5 bolt patterns are altogether different inside and out.

Correct, my '58 Johnson 10 has the 4 bolt, and my '57 Johnson 10 has the 5 bolt which looks exactly like my '66 Evinrude 18 so I was wondering if I could swap em?

Takes about 4 or 5 bolts and 10 minutes time. Thats your answer.

Uh, I guess that's one way to tell! I was hoping someone might know though! I reckon not.

Re: 18602C / QD18 lower unit swap

The ONLY thing that might be different is the length of the driveshaft. Lay them side-by-each and see. If they're the same length, they'll swap out. They probably will NOT swap out part for part, but as a unit, they will...
