Getting it ready for the water. Have a OMC aux motor mount to be mounted. Where at on stern ? What horsepower would be the best? What ever you do don't believe the genius part! Ken Transom seal to be replaced too. Carb yet to be done. Fuel tank drained , will add shut-off valve and extra filter. It is a stringer

Yamaha T8 or T9.9 are quite popular in the Northwest. Low gear ratios made for trolling. If you want to be real high speed, add an autopilot such as the TR-1 Gold now from Garmin.

If you run a lot of electrical stuff the 15 has a much bigger alternator. The port side is to offset the drivers weight on the starboard side. Smaller motors use less gas for trolling and larger ones help you handle rough water better and provide more power to get in if your main power fails.
It just depends on what you want to do.

You will get a lot more usable thrust out of a dedicated trolling motor which swings a much larger prop slow. No matter what, you will not be exceeding hull speed anyway so throwing a larger engine than a t8 or t9.9 just adds weight and there is no value to adding a engine pitched to plane a small boat rather than control a larger boat up to hull speed.

No disagreement on mounting on the side that benefits balance the best, space permitting.

Re: 19'1 islander- I/O aux. power

I have a 21 foot cheiftain, my kicker is on the starboard side, my batteries and kicker fuel tank are on port side to balance weight and moved as far forward as possible.
I would go with nothing less than a 15hp. I have a 15hp (2001) 2 stroke johnson, 4 blade prop (solars) 9 pitch. With a garlick motor bracket that gets the prop in the water. I get 5 mph at wot, 4500 rpms.

I personally if I was buying another motor I would go with a 20hp honda, same weight has 15hp.
I got my 15hp years ago for my 14foot car top klamath and did not want a heavier 4 stroke. The honda is 110lbs. I am considering buying the 20hp honda next year for my 21 foot cheiftain. and half way considering also leaving the 15hp. Kicker on each side of the boat since I go 20 miles off shore.
Make sure you go with a long shaft. Short shafts do not work well especially in rough water.
