I'm currently looking at an item up for auction next Thursday. The motor is an old Evinrude from the early 40's. The model number is "4366", which according to the ID PDF page in the FAQ was manufactured in 1941-42.

Two questions if anyone would be so kind to share their wisdom:

If I were to buy this motor, it would be to get it running. Not to use daily, but to be a working piece of history. Are the parts that would possibly be needed to do this easy to get? And if not easy, are they available at all?

I've noticed that the pre-bidding has this motor at around $35-40 off the bat. I'm assuming I'll be bidding against a collector. What is the largest reasonable amount to pay for this? Assuming I won't be "using" it, but will be restoring it as much as possible, I will pay whatever is reasonable based on the probability of a motor like this coming around again sometime. If these are rare, I could see high dollar. Any ideas? What would YOU stop at? :D

Thanks a ton! I know some of this is just a matter of opinion, but so far I like a lot of the opinions on here! hahaha

$35 is already past what I would pay, even if it ran. parts on it could be worth something, but hard to say. parts for a motor that old can be scarce. since you do not know much about the motor, and seem to be looking at it as an "investment" you may want to look elsewhere. it would make a great decoration if you had the whole antique boat thing going on. But I seriously doubt that you could turn a profit on that motor, but I am not a old motor guru. so you may want to wait and see if one of the old motor guys chime in.

Though I really wouldn't be looking to resell it, I would still want to be able to show friends and family my old WORKING early 40's outboard. The auction is listed as "Non-Running", meaning it probably wouldn't turn for the early 20-something kid who hastily checked it out. Most other motors on this auction are listed as "working condition unknown".

That being said, you gave me some really good and useful info. If finding a small simple part for this motor is a 6 month process of posting ad after ad, I'll probably say no thanks. With what you're saying, I'll probably set my cap at 50 or 60 because it really would look nice in my garage "display" (beauty is in the eye of the beholder hehehe). The bottom line is that my hobby is not to buy these and mount them on a wall.

My hobby is to buy these, fix them up, and THEN mount them on a wall. ;)

Thanks again.

its all about " what its worth to you" , as sparkie said, he wouldnt pay $35 for it running. i would pay a couple of hundred for it running! and i would use it on occasion. parts arent easy to find, but not impossible. ive bought antique motors that will never run again...for wall hangers....for $75! go with what your comfort level allows.
