1946 Evinrude model 4389 Light Four Gear Oil

Does this outboard use gear oil or grease? I'm trying to find out for a co-worker. We have the motor here, model is 4389 and s/n is 21671.

Any info about the lower unit service procedure and recommended lubricants would be greatly appreciated.

I would be extremely surprised if it takes oil. Grease was the norm in those days. Here's something that is worthy to note: Fuel/oil mixture is 3/4 pint SAE 40 non-detergent oil per gallon!!!

We used to put Lubriplate 105 grease in them.
