Hello, new here just bought a 1952 Johnson 5 hp. It seems in good shape started and ran but kept quitting just as the previous owner had said. I pulled off the carb it was quite full of debris. I looked for any check balls but with the amount of dirt inside could not find any, but when blowing out passages I felt something blow into my hand and I'm not sure if it was dirt or a part of the carb for example a check ball. I should have know better than proceed without a service book but excitement got the best of me. I continued to reassemble the carb installed it but fuel is leaking out from the top. I have searched for a rebuild diagram with a parts list to see if I have lost a part but can not find one, can someone advise? Thanks, meanwhile I will go and lap in the needle and seat in case that is all it is.

Re: 1952 5hp TN 28 Carb Question

I appreciate the diagram and I have saved it however the problem turned out to be my mistake on the reassembly of the carb. Being new here I'm not sure I should admit what was wrong but it may help someone else the first time they work on this type of carb. Turns out that I did not align the needle valve into the hole in the top cover. I almost did it a second time but by blowing into the fuel inlet fitting after putting the cover on I realized the needle was all of a sudden not sealing like it did before the cover was installed. I removed the cover and discovered the problem put it back together and reinstalled it on the engine. It ran ok but I still have some tuning to do.

Sorry, you don't get a medal for being the first one to do that. It's happened a lot of times. Just funnin' ya.
