Hello everyone, I'm new hear but I am an automotive mechanic and have worked on my older evinrude for awhile now. But I have a question about the impellar. I was replacing it yesterday and forgot to note the placement of the fins in the water pump housing. I know the shaft spins clockwise, but what is the proper way the fins are suppossed to be. If any one has a pic or can explain it, let me know. Thanks again.

Since the drive shaft turns clockwise, the arms point counterclockwise. You would slide the pump housing down the shaft until it contacts the impeller. Press down on the housing while turning the shaft clockwise. The arms should bend and enter the pump housing. Applying dish washing soap to the inside of the housing and impeller fins aids in the final assembly. The soap simply washes out when the motor is run.

You can do the same pump install without rotating the shaft too. Lower the pump housing down the shaft until it contacts the impeller. Now apply downward pressure on the housing and rotate the housing Counterclockwise. After the housing is fully seated, finally rotate the housing until the mounting holes are aligned and bolt it down. Either way, the arms will point counterclockwise when you're done.

Be sure the water tube enters the pump housing rubber grommet when you re-assemble everything.

If that is a 1953 engine, replace the entire pump assembly, it is probably long over due.

depends on when it was changed last. If it was changed the last time it needed a water pump it should be good. Inspect it real good before buying a new one.

Re: 1953 Evinrude 15hp impellar question

Well I got this motor two years ago and it was running great. Looks like it had been overhauled a few years prior. Last year I had a ign. coild go bad so I replaced the coils, points and wires. The tunup kit came with an impellar but I never installed it. I am going to be taking my boat up north with me this year and wanted to check it over. Since I had the impellar I though I would inspect the one in the housing. That imepllar and housing looked to be in good shape but I figured since I had taking everything apart I would replace it. I just wanted to make sure I had the impellar going in the proper direction. Thanks guys for your quick replies.

The impeller will straighten itself no matter which way you install it.
