Hello, i have been doing a lot of inboard motors but lately i been restoring a 10hp Johnson QD-14 i got at an auction for 45 dollars. Coils and plugs and condensors ... well everything under the flywheel looks mint. My question is i gapped them to .020 and then noticed when i turn the throttle on the tiller arm that the shaft is slightly out of round. It causes one point to close while other opens as they rotate around it. . If this is the case then at what throttle selection do i gap them at.

The points do not open at the same time, you will only have one set of points open at a time.

ok so do i want it at WOT or slow or start or shift when i gap them. Im assuming gap them at their widest opened spot? if thats the case mine are way too far gapped when open all the way. Im a newb at this point so want to be sure. Never messed with points.

I don't think it matters where you have the throttle set, For some reason I do it at an idle.
You have a cam around the crankshaft that has a high spot on it. Rotate the crankshaft until the rubbing block on one set of points is centered on the highest point of the cam, set the points to .020 Rotate the crankshaft until the rubbing block on the other set of points is centered on the cam and set them to .020, you should be done.

Thanks for the help. I got the points gapped and cut the plug wires back about a half inch and reseat them to the coils. After a little finness she popped right over and runs smooth. But had no water flow so took out the lower end and the impeller was shot bad. So going to get a new impeller. So excited i got this motor for 45 dollars and only have to put an impeller in it.

Ain't it great, neet engine for almost nothing , a little repair work and a great working engine. Good luck with your new engine.

Cool old motors. I had one of those once. It's the first model year of the QD with the roto-grip throttle and the last year of the fins forward cowling. Pretty nice deal you got on it. :D
