coming along slow but getting there, I added a solenoid and starter button, modern fuel pump and hose connector, ignition from start to finish, carb rebuild. Oh yeh, and a new (used) flywheel, This engine took a hard fall from a second floor shed, Actually it was thrown by PO, It was bound for the dump when I got it, the hood has a battle scar, (crack) from the drop and the original flywheel had a wobble, not bad but noticeable, engine was also weather seized, It now has 120 psi top & bottom cylinders. The only other damage is the shift handle is bent a bit inward and rubs the cowl, it shifts Ok so I will let it rub' I'm afraid if I try to bend it back out it might snap. cheers

Nice work on the updates. This motor was thrown out from a second story?? Wow!! There should be a crime for treating classics in this manner. Well, it's in much better hands now. Good work. :)

If it was tossed like that be sure to check the top of the crankshaft for wobble/trueness, too. Nice work...solenoid and starter button is always a good addition.

Starter button is NICE. Your motor, well tuned, would start in 3 pulls cold, but if it took 10, you'd need bow-flex. :)

Great job. I love the starter button too. Are you gonna keep it tiller drive? If you go with controls, how will they connect to the motor with the starter button in its current location? Also, does it mater how the fuel pump is installed (i.e. pointy end up vs. down) on the power head, or will it work equally well either way? Thanks for all the pics and updates.

I like how you mounted the starter button where it is handy, but doesn't affect the originality of the cowl and such. One thing I might do differently if it were mine is somehow get the solenoid out from under the carb and fuel filter in case of a fuel/spark combo touching it off, and, those fuel lines appear awfully close to some fast spinning flywheel teeth..... However, I think my own solenoid is pretty close to the carb on the starboard side, too, so I know how that is-----about the only free space in the cowl is in the carb/starter area.....
I have a '54 bigtwin, too. I find that if you choke it for more than a pull, it will leak fuel from the carb throat. I usually pull mine once on full choke, then again without any choke, and it starts. Thank goodness for electric start on these.......They're a tough pull!

It don't seem to matter which way the fuel pump is mounted I have them point up down and sideways and never had a problem, When I put the pull start back on there is a tin plate that goes between the spark plug wires / fuel hoses and the flywheel to protect everything from the flywheel rotation, This motor will stay a tiller because the tiller / throttle system is the ABSOLUTE coolest I have ever come across!!! cable operated and smoooooooooooooth as silk. I just love it. I could not fit the solenoid anywhere else, but do plan on a cover of sorts between it and carb body, If anyone has done a mod for mounting in a safer better location on one of these Please share, I agree its not ideal, I also want to make some type of quick thumb screws for the cowl, it is a 3 piece cowl 10 screws to remove it, I was thinking some kind of fold down thumb screw, any ideas? thanks.

Yea, those tiller handles are a bit of a rare comodity. They help the resale value quite a bit.

Dang,
I totally forgot about the flywheel cover! you're right, of course! No problem with the fuel lines. Those cowl screws are the worst thing about the evinrudes of that vintage. I may have an extra shift handle if you need it. I'll have to go look...
Nice work,

That e-start button mount is way cool. No extra hole. :)

I'd like to do this to my '58 Johnson Seahorse. Any chance you could give me instructions on how to wire up the solenoid and starter button like this? Fantastic! thanks. pottstrail@yahoo.com. any advice is appreciated.
