Ive got a 1954 fleetwin 7.5 and i was out on the lake the other day and it just quit on me so i did a little looking around and i found fuel leaking from my bottom spark plug hole in the head. The threads are just about gone so my plug wont tightin whats the best repair for this other than looking for a new head if there is another way???

Most use a heli coil. It's a threaded insert. You can install it yourself or go to a machine shop to have it done.

Usually a loose/leaky plug would not make it quit though. Even if it lost compression in the lower cylinder it would usually still run. Did you check for spark after it died?

Well to get more in depth it died but i could get it started again but it ran terrible and everytime ide put it in gear it would die. But i could get it running it just wasnt pretty.. I was afraid my water pump stopped and it was overheating so i just rowwed back. But ive been out of town and havent had a chance to get back at it.

I'm pretty sure you can run that engine with one plug. That's why there are two coils, so if one fails, you can still run the engine. I've done, but more because I was too dumb to figure out the different sound of an engine running on one or two cyl. I like that about these engines, the redundancy of two coils, two sets of points,

I've heard bad things about helicoil. Some of my ideas, that I've never tried, were to find a bigger spark plug and drill and tap a larger hole. It may be far fetched, but. You could also have a welder lay a bead around the inside of the hole and then drill and tap through the new material, if possible. I don't know what they weld aluminum with, tungsten or something?

Ive heard some bad stuff about helicoils to but at the moment it seems like my only choice unless anyone has a handle on parts for this thing ive checked around and it seems like most of the vintage part dealers start one or two years after mine was built so who knows either way im gonna fix the ol girl i really like it
